In the days before package holidays, most Brits would round up the family and head off to Pontins or Butlins. Work colleagues, extended family members and neighbours would all holiday together.
Summer days began with an early morning 'Wakey Wakey' call and the 'Happy Campers' were encouraged to have 'fun' by endlessly cheery Redcoats. Families enjoyed the endless dawn till dusk delights of simple entertainment, such as knobbly knees and glamourous granny competitions, and they spent their nights in unheated army camp style 'chalets'. This living history series recreats a typical ‘Holiday Camp’, we staff it with authentic characters and bring in a socially mixed bunch of fifty volunteers, from young kids to grandmothers, all eager to experience the 1960’s holiday camp experience. For two weeks during the summer they are completely immersed in the 1960’s holiday camp life, all the fun, the drab food, plus twenty-four-hour supervision to discourage over eager night time activities! This extraordinary experience for the modern generation, brings back forgotten days of extended families enjoying life together and delivers an entertaining and popular summer series.
